Many people ask about the history behind our name “Bangkok 54″. We believe that the number ‘nine’ is a lucky number, that’s ‘Gauo’ in Thai, which means step forward. And traditionally, using a single digit is not as lucky as using number in pair, hence the 5 and the 4. Having a business name that bring luck and prosperity is good for any business. Well, we can’t really take all the credit, because we actually inherited the name from the previous owner, who also inherited the name from the owner before him. We know that Bangkok 54 was the original name for an Oriental grocery store previously located in Alexandria. When we took over the business, it made sense to keep the legacy name that has been around more than 30 years and is well known among the Thai community.
At Bangkok 54 we try very hard to make the best, authentic Thai food — the same way we would have them at home. Our mom is the ‘curry master’ and she is very strict. Thus, if the dish is supposed to be spicy, it is very hard for us to tone it down. That goes the same with non-spicy dishes; we do not add chili to non-spicy dishes because it ruins the taste! But we aim to please and are happy to provide complimentary chili on the side per your request. Lastly, our mom is adamant about not adding any MSG to any of our dishes, we don’t use it at home and we certainly don’t use it at our restaurant. Lastly, if you have any food allergic, please do let us know because not all ingredient details are listed on the menu. We hope that you have a memorable dining experience at our restaurant.
